What is an MX Record?

MX records tell outbound email servers where to deliver email to for any specific domain. The sending mail server will lookup the MX record from authorized DNS Servers to get your MX record for your domain. Then other servers will know the exact location where to deliver email bound to your domain. When you set an MX record, you are telling others on the internet which mail server will handle incoming email for your domain. If someone sends an email to "[email protected]," the MX record ensures the email goes to the right target email server that handles yourdomain.com's emails.

What is the MX Priority?

Priority values indicate the order in which email servers should be used to deliver emails. The lower the number, the higher the priority.

  • Priority values indicate the order in which email servers should be used to deliver emails. The lower the number, the higher the priority.
  • In this case, emails will first be sent to mail.primary-server.com because it has the lowest priority number (10).
  • If the primary server is down or unavailable, the email will be sent to the next available server, mail.backup-server.com, which has a higher priority number (20).
